Diary of a Business Geek: Make Your Spine Count

After a whirlwind first half the month (March) driving up and down the coast between Noosa and Tweed Heads multiple times, I gained a crash course in respecting your body.

Whilst I love yoga and pilates during the hightail and whirlwind first half of the month they slipped to the side whilst I slotted in work and working on my business in between my time on the road.

The later half of March I paid my price, having spent camped out on my hallway or lounge room floor stretching my body and spine. Listening to each vertebrae needing to click itself into place.

The worst moment knowing that I would struggle to drive home from Noosa as the knot in my hips was so bad that I could barely negotiate the clutch and gears – I spent the next 5 hours stretching out the pain.

I had flash backs to my mother shattering her discs, only years older than I am now and being out of action for months – fear set deeply in. The kind-hearted advice from my Dr Brother of what signs to look for didn’t help either.

But with an ongoing plan to regain the strength and tone to the muscles in my back – two weeks on my back is ‘back’ on track.

The Seven (Deadly) Sins to Avoid When Marketing Your Book

(Deadly) Sin #1: Marketing, What Marketing?

It sounds simple right, since MARKETING sells books but it is not uncommon to be privy to a conversation with an author who vents their frustration at having 90% of their printed books sitting in their garage (months after it was printed), they can’t land a distributor and ask what have they done wrong? The blank face and awkward silence when I ask what marketing activity they have undertaken followed by a bashful ‘I have a website’ provides both of us with the answer. Marketing SELLS books – develop a 12-month marketing plan that will take you through the writing, production, launch and post launch stages of your book publishing journey.

How to Keep Your Self-Publishing Resolutions in 2013!

1. Set Clear & Measurable Goals: Establish your launch date and work backwards. Create achievable milestones that will guide your self-publishing journey through the writing process and beyond into creating your online platform, building and implementing your marketing plan, working with your team of book editing, typesetting, marketing and printing specialists and launching your book.

2. Schedule Writing Time Into Your Diary: With your launch date in mind and your chapter outline created all you need to do is fill in the gaps, or pages – if you will. Take time each day to work towards your chapter milestones and content goals.

3. Celebrate Your Milestones: Take the time to celebrate the quality content that you have created. Seek feedback from others in your field or test your content within your client base. Reward yourself for achieving each milestone.

4. Share Your Ambitions With Others: The key to your accountability will be by sharing your ambitions and journeys with others. Find a writing buddy who you can bounce your content off. Join a writer’s group and follow the journeys of like-minded people. Or undertake a book marketing course, such as the Barefoot Basics ‘The Bestseller Incubator’ alongside fellow Authorpreneurs.

5. Start TODAY!: There really is no time like the present to begin formulating your secret to success in 2013!

Diary of a Business Geek: Alice Returns to Wonderland

With the aim of balance a career in marketing alongside building Barefoot Basics over the coming year and after much discussion (& plenty of tears), I recently made the decision to return to Sydney (alone) from the Sunshine Coast, to open new doors and to facilitate the positive change – leaving my Butcher and three poodles to fend for themselves beachside whilst I tackle the City.

“Short term pain for long term gain…” I pronounced with radiance at two interviews over the past week, hoping that the smile on the outside masked how much I desperately missed my loved ones on the inside.

Stagnation or limbo land – as I like to call it – has been ever present in our life for the last two and a half years. Having grown tired of waiting for the fog to clear, together we came to the decision that in order to create the change, we needed to become the change – and why not ruffle a couple feathers whilst we were at it!

So just under two weeks ago, my 30kgs of luggage and I flew back into Sydney – where at 32 years and 9 months, I find myself sleeping in my childhood bedroom at night, living under my parents roof with my little brother, adhering to no alcohol on school nights and catching public transport (plus walking around Sydney) with a confidence that I never had whilst growing up here.

In many ways it feels like time has stood still. Yet, the dynamics, relationships, conversations and possibilities have all evolved and grown.
